Espresso is a flavorful
Italian coffee beverage brewed by forcing hot water under high pressure
through finely ground coffee. Espresso was invented in the late 19th century
and has undergone considerable evolution principally in Italy. In the 1940's
technology permitted the use of increased pressure for the production of
espresso. Currently, espresso is brewed at pressures around 150 psi.
Espresso is much darker and thicker than
drip coffee, and is typically served in lower volume than brewed
coffee. Single or double shots of espresso is served in a demitasse cup
holding only 4oz. Triple shots are only for the stout of heart and are
served in an 8 oz. cup.
The thing to look for in a
real espresso is crema. Crema is a reddish-brown foam which floats on the
surface of the espresso.
Espresso is also the foundation for many drinks, such as
lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos, americanos and mochas.
